We are Looking for Volunteers

Help make a difference in our community and assist us in living out our mission statement. As a Therapeutic Riding Center, we depend on volunteers to assist us in our Therapeutic Programs, Special Events, and Barn/Property Duties.

Volunteer Requirements

  • Volunteers must be at least 13 years of age.
  • We would like volunteers to plug in regularly, choosing a time to come each week.

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Therapeutic Riding Volunteers: weekday afternoons as a horse leader, sidewalk, or lesson assistant.
  • Garden Volunteers: mornings and afternoons for watering and tending to the garden.
  • Barn/Property Volunteers: Fridays 3:00-5:00 or when available on weekdays, to complete barn chores or barn & property maintenance.
  • Event Volunteers: Usually Saturday mornings or Monday afternoons, to assist in setup, teardown, and during the event.

Horse leader: A horse leader is responsible for the equine during a therapeutic riding lesson. The leader, however, must also be aware of the rider, possible side walkers, and hazards in the arena, and on the trails.

  • Horse Leader Requirements
    • Volunteers must be 13 years of age.
    • Some previous horse experience, including riding and/ or stable management.
    • Ability to walk briskly for 30-45 min on uneven footing.
    • Attend Volunteer Orientation and complete our Horse Leader Training class.
  • Training
    • Attend Hestóvin Stables volunteer orientation.
    • Attend our Horse Leader Training class, specific to the responsibility of a horse leader, and demonstrate the skills required.

Sidewalker: A sidewalker is directly responsible for the rider. They walk beside the horse in alignment with the rider’s knee. Sidewalkers may be asked to support the rider with a heel or thigh hold.

  • Sidewalker Requirements:
    • Volunteers must be 13 years of age.
    • Be appropriate size and strength to support the assigned rider properly.
    • Attentiveness to input from rider and instructor.
    • Ability to help the instructor with mounting and dismounting.
    • Ability to walk on uneven footing for 30-45 min, with arms potentially raised.
    • Attend Hestóvin Stables Volunteer Orientation.
